Full Lockdown In Karnataka From May 10 to 24. Know What’s Allowed, What’s Not

Karnataka will impose a full lockdown from May 10 to 24 to break the chain of transmission of the novel coronavirus.  

The 14-day lockdown will come into force two days before the current “close-down” is to end. The government decided to impose the full lockdown following expert advice and because the “close-down” didn’t yield the expected results. 

The lockdown will remain in force from 6 am, May 10, to 6 am, May 24, according to an order issued by Karnataka Chief Secretary P Ravi Kumar on Friday, May 7. This order supersedes all orders issued previously pertaining to the similar matter. 

Here’s what you need to know about what will be allowed and what won’t: 

What’s not allowed? 

1. Schools, colleges, educational institutions. 

2. Hotels, restaurants, hospitality services. They can provide only takeaways (parcels). 

3. Religious places. 

4. Cinema halls, shopping malls, gymnasiums, sports complexes, stadiums, playgrounds, swimming pools, parks, entertainment parks, clubs, theatres, bars and auditoriums, assembly halls and similar places. 

5. All social, political, sports, entertainment, academic, cultural, religious functions and other functions. 

6. Metro trains. 

7. Government or private buses, personal vehicles, etc.  

8. Inter-state and intra-state movement of passenger vehicles (except for emergencies). 

9. Auto-rickshaws and cabs/taxis (except for emergencies)

What’s allowed? 

1. Hospitals, pharmacies, government offices, etc. 

2.  Trains, flights. 

3. Patients and their attendants, people travelling for vaccination. 

4. Auto-rickshaws, cabs/taxis taking passengers to airports and railway stations. 

Will grocery, vegetable, milk and meat shops remain open? 

Yes. Shops selling essential items, such as groceries, vegetables, fruits, meat, fish, animal fodder, etc, can remain open from 6 am to 10 am. Public distribution system (or ration shops) will also remain open. Sale of vegetables and fruits through push carts will be allowed only from 6 am to 6 pm. Milk booths and Hopcoms outlets can remain open from 6 am to 6 pm. 

What about restaurants, hotels and liquor outlets? 

They can remain open to give takeaways (parcels). You can’t dine or drink in. But you will have to visit the restaurant only by walk. You can’t drive there. Hotels/restaurants, however, can use vehicles for home deliveries. 

Can I travel by flights/trains/buses? 

All kinds of buses, government and private, will stay shut. Ditto with metro trains. But flights and train services will go on as scheduled. You can travel to any part of India. You need to show the valid ticket. 

What about auto-rickshaws and taxis/cabs? 

You can hire auto-rickshaws and taxis/cabs to travel during emergencies (such as going to hospital) and catch the flight or train. 

Can I travel in my own car from one city of another, say Hubballi to Bengaluru? 

You can travel in your personal vehicle from one city to another in Karnataka or outside the state only during emergencies. The police may ask you about the nature of the emergency. 

Can I order things online? Will they deliver them? 

Yes. You can order all kinds of things online, including foods and clothes. There’s no restriction on the movement of delivery boys. 

Will ATMs, banks and pharmacies remain open? 

Yes. 

Marriages and funerals? 

Marriages already scheduled will be permitted but cannot have more than 50 people. Funerals shouldn’t have more than five people. 

Will government offices remain open? 

All government offices are allowed to stay open.
