Surrender BPL Cards If You Own 2-Wheelers, TV, 5 Acres, Says Govt

BELAGAVI, FEBRUARY 15: The Karnataka government has said that people with BPL ration cards having two-wheelers, TV, fridges or over five acres of land should surrender the cards before March 31.

People owning such things are ineligible to possess BPL cards. If they fail to surrender their cards by March 31, they will have to face legal action, Food and Civil Supplies Minister Umesh Katti said in a press conference.

He said that possessing BPL cards involves the parameters given above. Anyone earning more than Rs 1.2 lakh a year cannot own BPL cards, he added.

The Congress, however, protested outside ration shops in Bengaluru, Dharwad, Mysuru and Tumakuru, against the government order.

Congress MLA U T Khader said that the matter had been raised when he was Food and Civil Supplies Minister in the Siddaramaiah government, but he had declined to implement the suggestion as people would be badly affected. Many people buy such things when they get offers like interest-free loans.

The state government is anti-poor. They should focus on identifying beneficiaries instead of stealing away the BPL cards.
