HUBBALLI: Shah Bazaar, an important business hub in the heart of Hubballi, shut down late on Friday afternoon in protest against the violence on Muslims in Assam and Tripura.
Shah Bazaar is a three-storey commercial complex with 199 shops that sell everything from apparel to mobile phones to watches to other electronic gadgets. It’s the popular with budget shoppers looking for some good deals and fast retailing.
Over the years, Shah Bazaar has grown in stature. It’s no longer restricted to the commercial complex. The surrounding shopping streets are also commonly referred to as Shah Bazaar.
A food street located next to Shah Bazaar and famous for meat delicacies also shut down in protest against the anti-Muslim violence.
A shopkeeper from Shah Bazaar said: “This is our way of expressing solidarity with the victims of the violence in Assam and Tripura. We can’t keep quiet. The government there must stop the violence. Peace must prevail.”
The shutdown of Shah Bazaar will affect weekend shoppers who usually start thronging the markets on Friday evening. Shah Bazaar will reopen on Saturday morning.
