10 Women, Minibus Driver Die In Head-on Collision On NH48.

Hubballi, January 15: Ten women who were traveling to Goa and the driver of their vehicle were killed near Itigatti in a head-on collision of their minibus with a tipper at around 8 am on Friday.

Sixteen members of the Ladies’ Club, Davangere, were on vacation and traveling to Goa. The accident occurred on the Pune-Bengaluru NH 48 near Itigatti. Dharwad Rural Police, who visited the accident spot and are investigating, said that the collision between the minibus and the tipper took place as neither driver had space on the stretch to make way for the other vehicle.

Preethi Ravikumar, daughter-in-law of former Jagalur legislator Guru Siddanagouda, is said to be one of the victims of the accident. The others who lost their lives on the spot include driver Praveen, Asha, Meerabai, Paranjyoti, Rajeshwari, Shakuntala, Usha, Veda, Veena, Manjula, Nirmala, Rajaneesh and Swati.

The driver of the tipper and five women who were traveling in it were seriously injured and were admitted to KIMS Hospital.

Suburban Police Inspector Yaligar said that a case has been registered. He said that there were repeated complaints of people to improve the narrow stretch, which cannot hold two vehicles at once and is also not one-way. The differences between the contractors and the government, however, had delayed the work to widen the stretch.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has condoled the death of the travelers and the driver in the accident in his tweet. He has also expressed condolence to the bereaving families and prayed for speedy recovery of the injured.

Number of the deceased persons is said to be increasing.
