Heavy Rain and Flood Alert in Dharwad District for Next 4 Days; DC Directs Officials to Take Precautionary Measures

Weak buildings at risk of collapse; public asked not to venture or take selfies near waterbodies and unsafe bridges

Dharwad, October 10: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rainfall and flood alert for the Dharwad district for the next four days.

The district has been experiencing continuous rainfall due to a low-pressure system, according to the IMD.

The district administration has instructed all government officials and other staff not to leave their workplaces without prior approval. And officials in all taluks of the district have to take necessary precautionary measures, according to Swarup T K, acting Deputy Commissioner of Dharwad and CEO of the Zilla Panchayat.

In a statement, she said that Dharwad district had recorded 26.8 mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours, compared to the normal of 4.4 mm. Except for Annigeri taluk, all other seven taluks have received significantly above-average rainfall.

Citing the met department’s forecast for heavy rainfall in the next four days, the acting DC instructed all district- and taluk-level officials from various departments to remain at their headquarters and take necessary precautionary measures.

What should citizens do?

The district administration has advised the public to stay indoors or in safe locations during heavy rains to avoid any mishaps caused by lightning and thunderstorms. During rainfall, people are urged not to wash clothes, swim, or herd cattle near rivers, streams or lakes. It is also advised to avoid travelling on unsafe bridges and refrain from engaging in activities that may be dangerous during heavy rains, the administration stated.

During heavy rains and floods, residents living in low-lying areas are advised to move to safer locations. Citizens, especially youngsters, are cautioned not to take photos or selfies near rivers, streams, lakes, or on unsafe bridges, as it could be dangerous. Precautionary measures should be strictly followed to ensure safety.

Continuous rains may cause houses, walls and other buildings at the risk of collapse, leading to potential deaths or injuries. Therefore, citizens are urged to take precautionary measures for their safety. The district administration has requested citizens to follow the weather alerts and advisories issued by the district and taluk administrations to prevent any accidents or harm.
