Ranebennur,May 25: Fraudsters, posing as Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officials, duped an 83-year-old doctor in Ranebennur in Haveri district to the tune of Rs 3.71 crore.
According to the cybercrime police, Dr Bheemsen S Karjagi of Sanjivini Nursing Home in Ranebennur, was duped by the fraudsters,
Dr Karjagi got a call from an unknown and the caller introduced himself as Dikshit Gidam, a CBI officer of Mumbai. He then told the doctor that a new bank account had been opened in his name by one Naresh Goyal and the account was used for various criminal activities, including bank fraud and money laundering.
The caller then allegedly asked for the doctor’s Adhaar details and inquired about the amount of money he had in the account. The caller then told Dr Karjagi to give his bank details.
After collecting the information of his 10 bank accounts, the fraudster cheated the doctor by transferring a total of Rs 3.71 crore from all the accounts to his account through RTGS, saying that verification of the accounts should be conducted.
Based on Dr Karjagi’s complaint, Cybercrime police have registered a case and started investigation.
