HUBBALLI: ‘Smart City’ Hubballi-Dharwad is hopeful of getting ‘smarter’ with use of an environment-friendly transport facility for residents through use of bicycles.
In order to turn towards the conservation of both the environment and fuel, the use of imported bicycles through the Public Bicycle Sharing (PBS) programme will be on the rise under the Smart City project. Reduction in air pollution is an added advantage that the government hopes to give the residents.
Citizens may rent and use the bicycles up to a limit of 30 kilometres within the twin cities, paying Rs 10 to Rs 15 per hour. As many as 340 bicycles worth Rs 17,000 to Rs 19,000 are being ordered from a Malaysian company and the twin cities are expected to get them within a week to a fortnight.
The PBS programme will be implemented at Rs 8.5 crore for management through a Bengaluru-based company. Also, citizens may rent the bicycles by making digital payment. There are plans to build bicycle parking slots in different parts of the twin cities for the convenience of the users.
