Bengaluru: From now on, no PU college in Karnataka will be allowed to use animals for biology practical classes as the Department of Pre University Education (PUE) has issued a circular banning use of animals at science laboratories during biology lessons.
This circular came following a request submitted by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) to the department.
“In the month of September, we received a letter from PETA adviser, Rohith Bhatia, requesting us to put a ban on using animals at our PU college science labs. Considering the same, we have issued a circular,” said a senior official of the department.
As per Section 17 (d) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animal Act (1960), educational institutions and hospitals should stop experiments with animals at their labs.
