DHARWAD: A large group of people and activists led by the local unit of Jamat-E-Islami Hind on Monday staged a protest against the rape and murder of woman veterinarian in Telangana demanding capital punishment for the rapists.
The protestors, who gathered outside the Deputy Commissioner’s office here, were raising slogans demanding capital punishment for the rapists. They were holding placards that read, ‘Hang the rapists’, ‘Justice for woman’, ‘Don’t get Raped’.
Speaking to Hubballi Times.com, Jamat President Mushtaq Ahmed Haveripet said, “If the laws are implied and police do their investigation properly then we will be able to give justice to the rape victims. We want the accused to be hanged.”
“If the police and judicial system had given appropriate punishment to rapists in previous cases, such incidents would have not recurred,” Haveripet added.
In the memorandum submitted to the Prime Minister via DC, the protesters demanded to setup a fast track court with a lady judge to solve rape cases. The protesters also demanded to setup special police stations where such victims can walk freely to complain about such incidents. The government should provide compensation of Rs. 1 crore and security to rape victims and witnesses; were some other demands included in the memorandum.
Members of SIO, GIO, Humanitarian Group, Habib foundation, IPF, APCR and some other progressive organisations participated in the protest.
