Dr Madhuri Kanitkar from Dharwad has brought laurels to Dharwad district as well as to the state by achieving one of the rarest feats in the Indian Army.
Dr Madhuri Kanitkar is a pediatrician working for the Indian Armed Forces. She has been decorated with 3-Star rank in the Indian Army and she is now a Lieutenant General. Dr. Madhuri is the first woman pediatrician to get elevated to this rank.
Dr. Madhuri, who is former Dean of Armed Forces Medical College Pune, is the third woman officer in the country to get a 3-Star rank. She is currently posted in Udhampur’s Army Command Hospital.
Background of Dr. Madhuri
According to a DH report, born in Dharwad in 1960, Madhuri wanted to become a doctor after getting inspiration from her great-grandmother Saraladevi Khot, who was a doctor in 1920s.
Subsequently, Madhuri pursued MBBS from Pune University where she came out with flying colours as she topped her MBBS batch. She also received President’s Gold Medal for the best outgoing student of the graduate wing in academics and extra-curricular activities in 1982.
Soon after becoming a doctor, she joined Armed Forces Medical College (AMFC) at Pune. She got married to Rajiv Kanitkar. He is also a lieutenant General. They are the first couple in Armed Forces to reach this rank.
