HUBBALLI: Karnataka reported the highest-ever increase in Covid-19 cases in a single day, recording 99 cases on Monday, May 18.
Ironically, the surge came on a day Chief Minister announced additional relaxations in the lockdown from May 19 onwards.
Bengaluru Urban district reported 24 cases and Mandya (16 cases). While no new cases were reported in Dharwad, the neighbouring Gadag district reported five of them. One of these five cases has a travel history to Chennai, two are contacts of Patient 913. The remaining two patients are residents of a containment zone in Gadag district, as per the evening bulletin released by the Department of Health and Family Welfare.
Uttara Kannada, another district that borders Dharwad, reported eight new cases. All of them have travel history to Mumbai. Yadgir district, which borders the hard-hit Kalaburagi district, reported six new cases.
The record surge will prove challenging to the state government which is trying hard to contain the disease and revive the state’s flagging economy.
